Just in case you hadn't heard.....
Last summer, paleontologists from the Burpee Museum of Rockford, Illinois began preliminary excavations at what is now known as the "Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry site. Although many of you who have lived in the area are aware of the site, Burpee Museum’s recent in-depth investigation and excavation efforts revealed the site’s true magnitude. The 145-150 million year old site contains a staggering amount of petrified ancient remains.
Now for the good part.... a cooperative effort between the Burpee Museum, local town officials and the B.L.M. are working together on a long-term research initiative and plans to provide interpretive educational and recreational opportunities in coming years.
A public meeting was held on June 10, 2009, in which Director Scott Williams made a presentation to the people of Hanksville regarding the vast opportunities for our town which this quarry has the potential to provide. Not only are the educational aspects wonderful, but the opportunity for

increasing our local resources is also great. Burpee Museum has already applied for grants which will help to keep their educators on site for guided tours for longer periods of time, which will provide unique and enriching opportunities for schools, visitors, and many others. College students working on their degrees will also be visiting. Plans are already underway for a library and visitor's information center which, if all goes well, will be enlarged in the future to a national historic museum.
This is an exciting time in our town and everyone should take the opportunity to go visit the site, and become actively involved in the projects for improving our town's resources.
